Khomotso Phetla - Borderless Grounds

This mixed-media work centers on a seemingly simple domestic act: an elder tasting traditional beer to guide the community during initiation season. It highlights a critical cultural vulnerability — when our last traditional knowledge-keepers pass, irreplaceable wisdom goes with them. Rooted in the Sepedi proverb urging parents to pass down their sacred tools before returning to the ancestors, the piece questions modern educational paradigms, honouring indigenous knowledge systems that operate through embodied, participatory action rather than abstract theory. Both an homage to our matriarchal archives, and an urgent call to reclaim experiential learning while our living ancestors are still with us.

Mixed medium. 30 x 40 cm (50 x 40 x 5 cm framed). 2025.
